5th Islamic Solidarity Games wrapped up with solemn closing ceremony in Konya

A solemn closing ceremony of the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games has been held at the 15 July Stadium in the Turkish city of Konya.

Turkish Youth and Sports Minister Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoglu and President of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal Al-Saud attended the ceremony.

First, 54 flags of the countries participating at the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games were brought to the stage. Three-time winner of the Islamic Solidarity Games, a member of the national 3x3 basketball team Zaur Pashayev was the flag-bearer of Azerbaijani delegation. Azerbaijani athletes then entered the stadium to join the parade.

Addressing the event, Turkish Minister Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoglu said that the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games would continue on its way as a tool to strengthen togetherness among the Islamic countries: “There was never a loser in these games, the fraternity was the winner, and unity was the winner.”

ISSF President Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal Al-Saud said that more than 4,000 male and female athletes, representing 54 countries, successfully participated at the games.

The ISSF President also expressed his gratitude to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the high-level organization of the games.

The closing ceremony came to an end with the firework show.

A total of 281 athletes represented Azerbaijan in the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games. They competed in weightlifting, shooting, athletics, 3x3 basketball (women and men), judo, football, wrestling, gymnastics, aerobics, rhythmic gymnastics, handball (women and men), karate, kickboxing, fencing, archery, para-archery, para-athletics, para-swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, cycling, volleyball (women and men) and swimming.

Azerbaijan completed the Islamic Solidarity Games with 99 medals, including 29 gold, 36 silver and 34 bronze, ranking fourth among 54 participating countries.
