I am happy to win silver for Azerbaijan at Rio 2016, wrestler Asgarov VIDEO
Baku, August 24, AZERTAC
“I am happy that I added silver to Azerbaijan`s 18-medal haul at Rio Olympic Games,” freestyle wrestler Toghrul Asgarov told AZERTAC`s correspondent during the ceremony to welcome Team Azerbaijan at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport. “Surely I wanted to win a gold medal in Rio to become the first two-time Olympic champion in the history of Azerbaijan. But, unfortunately, I had to be satisfied with silver,” said Asgarov, who won Olympic wrestling gold medal in 2012 Summer Olympics in London. “However, I think that at competitions where each of the athletes is strong every medal is very precious.”
Asgarov said the semi-final encounter was “especially difficult” for him. “Despite the injury that I got at the beginning of the bout, I managed to mobilize and win. But the injury made itself felt in the final bout, and I lost to my rival from Russia who, by the way, was very strong.”
“Now I will do my best to repeat my London Games success in Tokyo in 2020,” Asgarov added.
