AZERBAIJANI DISABLED ATHLETES PARTICIPATED IN SPECIAL OLYMPICS EUROPEAN YOUTH GAMES IN ROME
The competition gathered young athletes from over 30 countries suffering from various intellectual disabilities to compete in several disciplines: athletics, swimming, basketball, football, gymnastics, bowling, boules.
The Azeri team was led by President of the country’s Special Olympic Committee Shanin Aliyev.
Azerbaijan’s swimmers Sabina Huseynova and Asmar Maharramova ranked first and third respectively in women’s 50m backstroke event.
Asmar Maharramova also won the freestyle event.
Anatoly Mehdiyev came third in men’s 50m backstroke and second in the freestyle event.
Another Azeri freestyler Murad Akhundov ranked third.
Sprinter Sahib Rzayev was first in the 50m race event.
Tarana Qojayeva won gold in the 200m and silver in the 100m race.
Aynur Nurulu ranked first in women’s broad jump, while Asiman Ismayilov was second among men.
Azerbaijani sprinters also won bronze in the relay.
Azeri basketballers snatched bronze medals after defeating Serbia 25-23 in the third-place match.
