Azerbaijan accedes to treaty on outer space

Baku, May 15 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan`s accession to the Treaty on the Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, will expand its international cooperation links.

This intergovernmental agreement will help accelerate the growth of the country`s activities in outer space, from both an economic as well as a scientific point of view and also serve as a form of intellectual potential and material and technical base in the space sector; it will also create favorable conditions for the implementation of the objectives set out in the state program for the creation and development of the space industry in Azerbaijan.

The Treaty on the Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies was ratified by the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and approved by the President.

The Outer Space Treaty which entered into force in 1967, defines the basic legal framework of international space law. States party to the treaty shall pursue the exploration and use of outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter and for the maintenance of international peace and security and for promoting international cooperation and mutual understanding.
