Heatstroke kills 15 people in 14 days in Bangladesh
Baku, May 6, AZERTAC
Fifteen people have died of heatstroke in the last two weeks across Bangladesh, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has confirmed, according to Somoy News.
Thirty-four people suffered heatstroke in the last 14 days, the DGHS control room said on Sunday (May 5).
In the last 24 hours, three people suffered heatstroke. Among them, one person hailing from Narail died, the DGHS said.
The highest number of deaths (7) was recorded in Magura. Apart from that, fatalities were reported in Chattogram, Khulna, Chuadanga, Habiganj, Rajbari, Jhenaidah, Lalmonirhat, Bandarban, and Madaripur.
A number of heat-related fatalities have been reported across Bangladesh in recent days as extreme weather grips the country. The country’s highest temperature was recorded at 43.8C in Jashore on April 30, which is the country’s highest temperature in 50 years, and the Met Office says the situation won't improve soon.
April is typically the hottest time of the year in Southeast Asia, but conditions this year have been exacerbated by the El Nino weather pattern.
Last year saw record levels of heat stress across the globe, with the United Nations weather and climate agency saying Asia was warming at a particularly rapid pace.
