Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry: Brussels meeting is another important step for future peace and tranquility in the region

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has made a statement on the meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders with the mediation and participation of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in Brussels, the press service departament of the Foreign Ministry told AZERTAC.

The statement reads: The meeting, which was the continuation of the joint meeting of the parties on 15 December 2021, was dedicated to the discussion of the situation in the region, including issues of the development of the region in the conditions of security, stability and peace.

The principles that Azerbaijan has always been proposing for the development of the region, including full compliance with the provisions of the trilateral statement dated 9-10 November 2020, continuation of humanitarian steps for promoting peace and confidence between the parties, implementation of concrete steps for delimitation and demarcation of the borders of the two states and opening of transport and communications, were broadly discussed during this meeting. The President of the European Council made a statement on the results of the meeting.

The importance of humanitarian actions for ensuring peace and confidence between the parties, as well as issues concerning missing people and significance of mine clearance, was stressed during the meeting and it was noted that the EU will provide support for humanitarian mine action in the region, including rehabilitation and reconstruction work.

The foreign ministers of both countries were instructed to start drafting a peace treaty between the two countries in line with the initiative made by Azerbaijan a year ago and the fundamental principles made by us some time ago.

The significance of delimitation and demarcation of the border between the two states was expressed and it was agreed in this regard to set up a joint border commission by the end of April this year.

In addition, the importance of opening transport and communications between the two countries, including both railways and roads, was stressed. It was reiterated that the EU was ready to support the development of the connective infrastructure.

Thus, the Brussels meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders with the participation of the President of the European Council is another important step towards ensuring the development of the region in accordance with the interests of Azerbaijan and in the conditions of peace and tranquility in future.”
