PACE SUSPENDED MONITORING ON TURKEY
Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, at its summer session on June 22 discussed the questions of “Fulfillment of obligations by Turkey” and “Performance by Turkey of decisions of the European Court on Human Rights”, correspondent of AzerTAj reports from Strasbourg. Speakers - head of the delegation of Azerbaijan at PACE Samad Seyidov, members of delegation Bakhtiyar Aliyev, Rafael Huseynov, Asim Mollazade, Ali Huseynov have noted, that recently in Turkey the important steps have been undertaken in the field of construction of a lawful state, new reforms are carried out. In the country, the death penalty has been abolished, and the state does a certain work connected to the right of national minorities on self-determination.
The deputies have noted, that for last three years in Turkey, being a member of the Council of Europe since 1949, there were serious alterations, the attention to education system is raised, conditions for a freedom of speech and press improved, the new laws concerning freedom of women were adopted. It has been underlined that Turkey being an example for all Muslim world, in true sense of the word has taken a way of democratic development. Owing to these factors, the deputies have suggested to suspend monitoring on Turkey. The offer of deputies has been put on voting.
On results of voting, PACE has made a decision on suspension of monitoring on Turkey.
