PRESS-SECRETARIAT OF FRENCH FOREIGN MINISTRY CIRCULATED STATEMENT ON PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN AZERBAIJAN
On October 15, Wednesday, Azerbaijan conducted its first presidential elections for the first time since Azerbaijan joined the Council of Europe. We learnt of the resounding victory of Ilham Aliyev and preliminary conclusions of OSCE observers. We fully agree with the positive aspects of elections indicated by this organization - good administration and genuine right of choice, its position as to the shortcomings.
The new President should have an open dialogue with all the political forces of the country and pursue the course of reforms and building of the legal state.
We urge government executives and opposition to condemn the fact of injuring people in the course of law-enforcement actions against unwarranted disorders.
Along with this, we would like the new President to continue the efforts to maintain peace. France, as the Minsk group co-chairman, stands for peaceful resolution of Nagorno-Garabakh conflict and ready to help him in this respect.
