Seminar on frozen conflicts in Eastern Europe held in Sweden
Baku, April 26 (AZERTAC). A seminar on frozen conflicts in Eastern Europe, which made special accent on Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, was held in Sweden. The event was organized by the Swedish Institute for International Studies.
Representatives of Sweden Azerbaijanis Congress (SAC) took part in the seminar.
The seminar gathered together various European experts and officials, including former Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg, head of Swedish Foreign Ministry`s department on issues of Eastern Europe and Central Asia Martin Hagstrem and journalist Torgni Hinnem.
Addressing the event, Foreign Ministry`s official Hagstrem said that Sweden did not recognize self-proclaimed governments in the territories of Eastern European countries, underlining those conflicts, including the Nagorno-Karabakh should be solved on the basis of international law on territorial integrity of states.
He expressed hope that Eastern Partnership project would make contribution to holding of dialogue between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Hagstrem described the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict as “very difficult”, saying as there is no specific peace agreement. “The European Union tries to prevent the escalation of the conflict”, he underlined.
On the sidelines of the seminar, SAC representatives were presented a new edition of the magazine of the Swedish Institute for International Studies which contained a special article about the current situation around the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Touching upon the political processes in the South Caucasus, the author pointed out Nagorno-Karabakh as “historical territory of Armenia”. SAC representatives immediately made an objection on this serious mistake. Officials of the Swedish Institute for International Studies apologized and promised to make certain correction.
