U.S. EMBASSY PRESENTS SPEAKER ON ISLAM
The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that Dr. Hibba Abugideiri is visiting Azerbaijan from October 27 until November 1, 2003, as part of the Department of State’s U.S. Speaker program, A professor of Middle Eastern History at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., Dr. Abugideiri will lecture on a variety of topics, including women in Islam, religious tolerance, Islam and democracy, and Islam in America. This is Dr. Abugideiri’s first trip to Azerbaijan, but she has previously lectured as a U.S. Speaker in Uzbekistan and Suriname.
Professor Abugideiri teaches classes on Middle East history, including the modern Middle East survey and women in Arab world, She specializes in gender history and 19th-cenntury Egypt. She collaborated with John L. Esposito and Yvonne Y. Haddad to author “The Islamic Revival Since 1988: A Critical Survey and Bibliography”, and has published articles on Arab nationalism, women in Islamic exegetical texts, and colonial medicine. Dr. Abugideiri holds a Ph.D from Georgetown University.
