Ahmed Baba: Nigeria’s housing crisis reached 28 million units

“Nigeria currently has a housing shortage of 28 million units,” said Ahmed Baba, Technical Assistant to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL), Nigeria's leading government-backed housing finance institution, in his remarks at the event on “Coalition of builders promoting productive partnerships in the global south, and Pre-launch of the C A H F Housing Finance Yearbook 2025/2026,” held on the sidelines of the WUF13.
He noted that, based on expert assessments, the figure translates into over 100 million people experiencing housing problems.
He said the figure equals the combined population of South Africa and Ghana, noting that Nigeria’s mortgage-to-GDP ratio is below 1 percent and housing loan rates of 20–32 percent are severely limiting access to affordable housing.
