The first match between handball teams of Azerbaijan and Belarus for the right to participate at the final stage of the European Championship took place May 29 in Baku.

If Azerbaijani team wins in both legs it will be the first in the history of independent Azerbaijan when national team qualifies for the final of European championship.

European championship will be held in Hungary from 9 to 19 December and drawing will take place on June 10. Five teams guaranteed their spot in the tournament. These are host-country, Hungary, acting European champion Denmark and national teams of Norway, France and Russia.

Azerbaijani team ranked second in the group consisted of Bulgaria, Switzerland and Greece.

Despite Belarusian team’s lead in the first minutes of the match Azerbaijani team could secure a narrow 12:11 after the first half.

In the second half, guests could win 25:21.

The winner will be known in the return match in Minsk, Belarus on June 5.
