Azerbaijani doctors enhance their knowledge

A three-day War Surgery Seminar commenced in Barda, organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation in Azerbaijan in cooperation with the Ministries of Health and Defense of Azerbaijan. The course was held from 6 to 8 September at Barda Diagnostic Centre.
Around 40 medical specialists from civilian and military hospitals of Azerbaijan participated in the event. Through presentations and discussions, participants learned more about surgical management of various types of war wounds, war surgery anesthetics, handling and control of infections, and management of patients’ influx during emergencies.
Two ICRC surgeons, Dr. Martin Herrmann (Germany) and Dr. Marco Pinna Pintor (Italy) facilitated the seminar. Both of them have many years of experience treating war-wounded patients at ICRC-run hospitals around the world and delivering seminars for local doctors.
“Since 1989, ICRC has been running courses on war surgery in numerous places affected by conflicts”, says Jihad Nabhan, Head of Barda Sub Delegation. “Through learning and sharing of experiences, we aim at building capacity of medical personnel to treat properly any patients with injuries. It is also an opportunity for us to enhance our own knowledge and practices by engaging with specialists from civilian and military health structures”.
In Azerbaijan, this course was organized for the first time.
