BTC’S CONSTRUCTION HALTED IN GEORGIA

According to information received by AzerTAj, construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) MEP has been suspended in a 15 kilometer-long section of Georgia’s Borjomi area for two weeks, BP-Azerbaijan said Thursday.

Georgia’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources reportedly has suspended the construction in order to inspect compliance with environmental safety procedures. The ministry is planning to attract independent experts to check-up environmental safety situation in the resort area, said BP-Azerbaijan. The 1, 760 kilometer pipeline that will carry the Azerbaijani oil to European markets by-passing Russia is 70 percent complete on the territories of Azerbaijan and Georgia.

The first oil is planned to flow via the BTC in January 2005.
