David hits hat-trick as Canada cruise past Qatar

Jonathan David’s hat-trick powered Canada to a historic victory over nine-man Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver. It marked the first FIFA World Cup victory for the 2026 co-hosts, who, with four points, are on the verge of reaching the knockout stage.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch called on the fans and players to make Qatar feel their presence, and both delivered. Cyle Larin, fresh off his goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina, slotted home a rebound. David took it to another level, unleashing a powerful volley that flew past Mahmoud Abunada.
Things went from bad to worse for Julen Lopetegui’s side after Homan Ahmed was sent off with a red card for bringing down Tajon Buchanan in the 30th minute. David made Qatar pay, stabbing home his second goal just before the break.
Qatar were reduced to nine men when Assim Madibo was shown a red card for his challenge on Ismael Kone. Nathan Saliba’s free-kick goal followed, before an own goal by Mohamed Manai and a late strike from David capped a memorable night for Canada.
