EXPLOSIONS KILL 173 IN MADRID
Over 170 people died in Madrid as a result of explosions at train stations. Two bombs were set off in the passenger shuttle train, which was approaching the Atocha station at rush hours. Atocha is the huge transport complex in downtown with its own underground station. The bombes also detonated in two other stations located in the line to Atocha.
The government of Spain announced a three-day mourning.
An urgent sitting of the government chaired by Prime Minister Hose Maria Asnar dealt with the bloodiest terrorist act in the history of Spain.
