F1 Chinese Grand Prix could see double-header in Shanghai: reports

The Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai is among those being considered to host a double-header event by Formula 1 organisers, according to reports.
Racing website The Race reported that the F1 governing body is looking to fill its 15-race calendar after confirming eight races in Europe.
Shanghai has emerged as a possible destination to stage two races, along with Russia and the Middle East.
“The Race understands China has joined Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and Sochi among the candidates to hold double-headers as F1 works to ensure it hits the 15-race minimum it has targeted to satisfy TV contracts and guarantee revenue,” they wrote.
Sochi organisers told Russian media last week that they are willing to hold two races, while both Britain’s Silverstone and Austria's Spielberg circuit have agreed to host double-headers in July and August respectively.
“To facilitate these possibilities, it is understood F1 is willing to offer a half-price race-hosting fee for a second event at venues,” The Race reported.
First held in 2004, this year’s Chinese Grand Prix was originally set to open the season on April 19 and it has a new provisional date of October 4.
Several other Asian races including Vietnam, Singapore and Japan are in jeopardy because of coronavirus measures, while The Race reported that the Brazilian Grand Prix may also be cancelled this season.
