GERMANY SATISFIED WITH DEVELOPMENT OF BILATERAL RELATIONS
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov met with the delegation led by German foreign minister Mr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, 19 February.In meeting, discussed were a number of issues, including politics, economy, cultural ties and bilateral relations, as well as ensuring security in region, the talks carried out for settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Elmar Mammadyarov underlined the importance of visit of the Azerbaijan President to Germany last week, highly assessing the signed documents to enhance cooperation between the two countries.
The Foreign Minister of Germany, who presides at the European Union, reminded that 15 years ago the two countries have established diplomatic relations. He expressed pleasure with the current level of relations.
Noting that Germany is keen in quick settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and establishment of security in region, Mr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier stressed importance of continuation of cooperation between the EU and South Caucasus countries.
FM of Azerbaijan said the conflict should be settled only on the internationals legal principles and in the framework of territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and its Constitution. According to him, non-constructive position of Armenia and especially interference of the Armenian lobby to the process of negotiations impede solution of the problem.
Minister Mammadyarov expressed hope that Germany, as a president of the European Union, will exert certain influence on Armenia, which continues its aggressive and ethnic cleanse policy. He called for joint efforts to find resolution to the problem.
Integration to the European and Euro-Atlantic structures is one of the priorities of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy, Mr. Mammadyarov emphasized. At his words, the signing of Memo between EU and Azerbaijan on cooperation in the field of energy last year is of great value in this direction.
The sides agreed to announce 2008 “Azerbaijan Culture Year in Germany” and had comprehensive exchange of views on the matter.
