Heroic Cabo Verde hold Spain to draw
Baku, June 16, AZERTAC
FIFA World Cup debutants Cabo Verde produced a heroic performance to hold global heavyweights Spain to a 0-0 draw.
A nation of just over 500,000 people, Cabo Verde stood firm against Luis de la Fuente’s star-studded side, securing a result that will resonate across the football world.
Cabo Verde were superbly organized from back to front. While Spain predictably enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, they were frustrated for long periods by their spirited and determined opponents.
La Roja’s best first-half opportunity came when Ferran Torres struck the crossbar after being set up by Marc Cucurella. The rebound fell to Mikel Oyarzabal, whose instinctive header was brilliantly saved by Vozinha. The 40-year-old Cabo Verde goalkeeper was in inspired form and produced another outstanding stop to deny Aymeric Laporte’s header on the stroke of half-time.
The Blue Sharks also managed several promising attacks, providing their defenders with some much-needed respite.
Early in the second half, Fabian Ruiz curled an effort over the bar from distance, but the anticipated Spanish onslaught never fully materialized as Cabo Verde continued to defend resolutely.
In the 71st minute, De la Fuente introduced Lamine Yamal from the bench, and the teenage star immediately added greater dynamism and unpredictability to Spain’s attack. Nevertheless, Cabo Verde marshalled him effectively, and clear-cut chances remained scarce.
Oyarzabal had another opportunity late in the match but fired off target as Cabo Verde held on to claim a memorable point.
