Deputy Chairman of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan, Chair of the MM Standing Committee on Security and Defense Affairs Ziyafat Asgarov met with the Pakistani delegation led by Navy Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Shahid Karimulla on September 10.

At the meeting held in a warm and friendly atmosphere, Ziyafat Asgarov noted that Azerbaijan is interested in expanding links with Pakistan and stressed that the documents signed during reciprocal visits of the heads of state had created favorable conditions for development of the interrelations. According to him, the intergovernmental agreement on military co-operation signed last fall plays a special role in development of the relations between the two countries in military sphere. “Appropriate efforts are also being made by the inter-parliamentary friendship group founded in the Milli Majlis”, Ziyafat Asgarov said.

Then, he told in detail on the Azerbaijan’s hardest problem – the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Garabakh and stressed Azerbaijan highly appreciated Pakistan’s stance on the matter. Ziyafat Asgarov added that President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev is doing its best for peaceful resolution of the conflict, but “unless Armenia change its aggressive position, Azerbaijan will restore its territorial integrity by other means.”

Admiral Shahid Karimulla said the goal of the visit is to be thoroughly acquainted with the country and hold opnions exchange on a number of issues. He pointed out that despite frequent disagreements on domestic and some other issues between members of Pakistani Parliament, they have always been unanimous with respect to Azerbaijan.

“We support Azerbaijan not only because it is an Islamic country, but also because it is peace-loving nation, and will never revise our stance”, he said

The parties discussed other issues of mutual interest as well.
