On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Heydar Aliyev, the founder of the independent state of Azerbaijan, outstanding political and public figure, AZERTAC highlights the chronology of the thorny and glorious path traveled by the Great Leader of the Azerbaijani people, his unique political and public activities, and his life dedicated to the people.
21 January. Great Leader Heydar Aliyev arrived at Azerbaijan’s Permanent Representative Office in Moscow and issued a statement regarding the Soviet Army’s atrocities committed in Baku on January 20.
4 February. “Pravda” newspaper published an article about Heydar Aliyev, his political prosecution has begun.
9 February. He gave interviews to Russian TV host Andrei Karaulov and Moscow correspondent for the “Washington Post” newspaper David Remnick.
June. His interview with journalist Elmira Ahmadova in Moscow was published in the 6th edition of “Ulduz” magazine.
20 July. He returned from Moscow to Baku.
22 July. He visited Nakhchivan and met the residents at the city square.
21 August. Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of Nakhchivan ASSR adopted a resolution on the Nakhchivan ASSR citizenship of Heydar Aliyev.
25 August. “Respublika” newspaper published interview with Heydar Aliyev.
26 September. “Soviet Georgia” newspaper published interview with him.
30 September. He was elected as a Member the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan SSR and Supreme Soviet of Nakhchivan AR from Nakhchivan.
17 November. The 12th Convocation of the 1st session of the Supreme Soviet of Nakhchivan ASSR chaired by Heydar Aliyev kicked off. The decisions “on changing the name of the Nakhchivan ASSR”, “on Supreme State Body of Nakhchivan AR”, “on state symbols of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic” were adopted.
20 November. He delivered a speech at the meeting of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan AR.
21 November. Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan AR adopted decision “on providing political assessment of events occurred in Baku in January of 1990”.
24 and 29 November. He made a speech at the meeting of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan AR.

On 29 September, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed an Order to declare 2023 as a “Year of Heydar Aliyev” in the country. 10 May 2023 will mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Heydar Aliyev, the national leader of the Azerbaijani people, the founder of the independent state of Azerbaijan, and an outstanding politician and statesman.
