New supercomputer`s components unveiled

Japanese researchers have unveiled key components of a next-generation supercomputer that will be one of the world`s fastest, according to NHK WORLD-JAPAN.
Research institute RIKEN and electronics maker Fujitsu have been working on a successor to the K supercomputer as a national project. They have been assembling the machine since March.
On Tuesday, they showed to the media the new computer`s central processing unit, or CPU, and a system board that connects CPUs while cooling them.
They say the new computer will have CPUs that can process data 20 times faster than those used in the K model. They say it was able to calculate at up to 100 times the rate of the K model in a simulation.
The researchers say they will also optimize the data-transfer speed between memory and CPUs to boost the computer's performance.
They say the new computer will be capable of predicting rain and windstorms and other natural phenomena faster and more accurately than its predecessor. They say it will also allow automobile engineers to simulate realistic conditions when developing new vehicles.
The new computer is scheduled to replace the K model at RIKEN in Kobe City. The government plans to begin its operation in 2021.
The K model marked the world's fastest computing speed in 2011. But it has since been surpassed by Chinese and US machines.
