Norwegian ambassador hails Azerbaijani government`s attention to protection of Shaki`s cultural heritage

The Norwegian ambassador to Azerbaijan Bard Ivar Svendsen has hailed the government`s attention to the protection of the historical and cultural heritage of Shaki. The ambassador met with Head of Shaki City Executive Authority Elkhan Usubov as he viewed the Albanian temple in Kish village as part of his visit to the region. Ivar Svendsen said that it is his first official visit to Shaki, adding that he aims to closely familiarize himself with the development processes.
Usubov informed the ambassador about the ancient history, culture, economy and tourism potential of Shaki. He said that the Albanian temple was built in the 1st century AD. “The temple, which belongs to the early Middle Ages, was built of limestone. It is a hall-type temple with two domes. In accordance with Azerbaijan-Norway “Kish” project, restoration of the monument began in 2001, and it was inaugurated in September 2003. The project was supported by famous Norwegian scientist and explorer Thor Heyerdahl,” Usubov added.
The visit also saw the Norwegian ambassador view the Palace of Shaki Khans and Yukharı Karvansaray hotel.
