OSCE PROGRAM ON DEMILITARIZATION OF GEORGIA LAUNCHED

In the framework of the project of the Georgian office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe on demilitarization, on 3 October in the former airbase I n Shiraki in the east of the Republic was abolished several bombs.

The said action was a signal to launching the second phase of the project “Utilization and demounting reserves of ammunition and bombs in the former airbases”, implemented by joint efforts of the military scientific-technical center of Georgia “Delta” and OSCE representation in Georgia.

The date will become important in the process of clearing territory of Georgia from old ammunition of the soviet times, David Pirtskhalava, head of the project said. At his words, at the airbase in Shraki remain over 500 unexploded bombs suggested to abolish during recent month.

It has to be reminded that the first phase of the Project was implemented thanks to financial support of the governments of Great Britain, Germany, Turkey, Finland, and Netherlands and Sweden, while the second is to complete in June 2004 at account of receipts from Finland and Great Britain.
