PAKISTAN PM RESIGNS

According to the news, received by AzerTAj from Islamabad, Pakistan's Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujaat announced his resignation after two months in the job, stepping aside for President Pervez Musharraf's hand-picked candidate, former finance minister Shaukat Aziz.

Aziz will undergo a rubber stamp vote by the 342-member national assembly, which Information Minister Sheikh Rashid said would take place on Friday.

Rashid said Aziz was expected to be sworn in by Musharraf on Saturday and could seek a vote of confidence from parliament the same day.

Shujaat, who heads the ruling military-backed party Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid, took over a caretaker premier on June 30, four days after Zafarullah Jamali resigned under pressure from Musharraf.
