PRESENTATION ON TRANSIT MIGRATION CONDUCTED

The International Organization for Migration /IOM/ has presented the report “State of Transit Migration via Azerbaijan”.

Head of IOM Office in Azerbaijan Yoost van der Aalst updated the participants on the report entitled “The next stop …” elaborated by the organization. He said that the report contains a thorough analysis of the reasons, routes and methods of the transit migration and added that the Government of Azerbaijan has the necessary information to study the reasons of the transit migration. Most transit immigrants choose mainly Azerbaijan as a transit country because of the geographical proximity and similarity of cultures.

Most illegal immigrants use forged documents and services of middlemen. Most of illegal immigrants (58 percent) cannot pin down the duration of stay in Azerbaijan while 25 percent expressed their intention to leave Azerbaijan in a year.

The presentation participants stressed that transit migration worries the government and society.
