SEMINAR TERRORISM AND NUCLEAR SECURITY HELD
Opening the seminar, president of the Academy Mahmud Karimov in particular noted that today, international terrorism constitutes great threat to the civilized world and international security. However paradoxical it sounds, according to him, the scientific and technical progress, intensive international cooperation, globalization and information distribution promote terrorism. The widening range of tools used by terrorists today includes nuclear and radioactive materials, and Azerbaijan takes active part in reinforcing the regime of insuring nuclear security and joined all the principle agreements related to non-proliferation of the weapons of mass destruction.
Academician Karimov also pointed to 20% of Azerbaijan territories occupied as a result of Armenian aggression and remaining out of the Azerbaijan government’s control. This, he said, may promote nuclear and radioactive materials trafficking for their further use in terrorist actions. Mr. Karimov expressed hope that the seminar would contribute to strengthening peace and security in the region.
