Time to implement SDGs: UN chief

The time has come to implement development goals that will eradicate extreme poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all people.
That was the message UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon delivered to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York, according to UN Radio.
Countries are meeting in the chamber to exchange views and recommendations to guide implementation of the 2030 Agenda which recognizes that eliminating poverty is crucial to achieving a sustainable global future.
It came into force in January, alongside new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Mr Ban said the UN looks forward to hearing about countries' experiences towards achieving the SDGs.
Heads of State and Government agreed the 17 goals during a historic summit at UN Headquarters in September.
The UN Secretary-General said now is the time to implement them.
"The inaugural ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development two weeks ago was the first major global follow-up event to the historic agreements we made last year. The financing requirements to achieve the SDGs are enormous, and mobilizing these resources will be a significant challenge, particularly at a time of continued economic uncertainty and financial constraints."
Mr Ban assured countries that the UN will do its part to support them in transitioning to a sustainable development path.
