Trump, Abe look forward to meeting in New York in September: White House
Baku, August 23, AZERTAC
U.S. President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Wednesday they look forward to meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York in September, according to the White House, Kyodo news agency reported.
Speaking over the phone, Trump and Abe committed to maintaining "strong sanctions" on North Korea to compel it to give up its nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at a press briefing.
Speaking at a rally Tuesday in West Virginia, Trump said Washington will not take off "massive sanctions" on Pyongyang unless it eliminates its nuclear weapons program.
"I want to take them off quickly but they've got to get rid of the nukes," he said.
North Korea has yet to take credible measures to abandon nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles despite leader Kim Jong Un's commitment to "complete" denuclearization in a historic summit with Trump in June in Singapore.
