US Embassy official: Sport helps to strengthen friendship between peoples

“Sport is one of the most powerful tools that brings people together, regardless of borders, cultures, and languages,” said Mark Hernandez, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy in Azerbaijan, during his speech at a breakfast reception organized for the joint viewing of the USA–Türkiye match.
He noted that they were delighted to bring together representatives of Azerbaijan's sports community, as well as partners and friends of the embassy.
The embassy official emphasized that regardless of which team one roots for, sport unites people around a shared love for competition, team spirit, and fair play.
According to him, sport is an important platform that serves to develop international relations and strengthen the bonds of friendship between peoples.
Hernandez also highlighted that the declaration of Baku as the World Capital of Sports for 2026 once again demonstrates the importance of sport in terms of inspiring youth, uniting communities, and creating new opportunities for cooperation.
He added that the joint viewing of the USA–Türkiye match is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the game, reconnect with friends, and celebrate the international spirit of sports together.
