Wayne Rooney tops young sportsmen’s rich list with £82m fortune
Baku, April 23, AZERTAC
Wayne Rooney is Britain’s richest young sportsman with a staggering £82million fortune, according to The Sun.
The Manchester United captain tops the Sunday Times Rich List for athletes 30 and under. But golf star Rory McIlroy is fast catching up.
Roon’s wad was revealed as United admitted blowing over £10m on agents in just four months.
The Manchester United and England skipper apparently earned £10m over the past year.
The striker is on a £300,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford — plus has lucrative endorsements with Nike and Samsung — and sits comfortably ahead of tennis stars Andy and Jamie Murray by a tidy £24m.
However, Northern Ireland’s McIlroy boosted his bank balance by £18m to £56m.
And with golfers having longer careers than footballers, world No 3 McIlroy, 26, looks likely to surpass Rooney’s bumper earning if his form holds.
The Scottish brothers are worth a combined £58m — with Andy alone responsible for £57m — while Rory McIlroy takes third with £56m thanks to a whopping £18m increase in earnings.
The only other non-footballer to make the top ten is Amir Khan, who saw no change to his £18m fortune in the past year.
