What important missions were assigned to Azerbaijan within COP30?
Baku, December 2, AZERTAC
“Although Brazil officially holds the COP30 presidency, the trust Azerbaijan has earned over the years within the COP community, along with its positive experience as a bridge between the North and South, allowed the Brazilian side to entrust Azerbaijan with several important missions,” Yalchin Rafiyev, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and COP29 Lead Negotiator, told AZERTAC.
“One key mission was to help determine the host country for COP31. Australia and Türkiye were candidates, and the choice between them was considered highly delicate.
“Another crucial responsibility related to the Global Stocktake (GST) adopted at COP28 in Dubai. Azerbaijan and Norway were tasked with preparing the dialogue events for GST implementation and contributing to an important document covering its three main points.
“As a result, success was achieved on both fronts: Türkiye was selected as the host of COP31 and will also chair the event, with Australia consulting during the negotiation process. At the same time, the GST document was adopted thanks to the joint efforts of Azerbaijan and Norway,” Rafiyev added.
