Baku, February 11, AZERTAC

Ambassador of Cuba to Azerbaijan Alfredo Fidel Nieves Portuondo has today visited Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC) to familiarize himself with the agency’s newly launched Spanish language department.

The ambassador met with the department staff, and exchanged views on the presentation of news in Spanish and information about Azerbaijan that may be of interest to the Spanish readers.

Describing AZERTAC’s spreading news in Spanish as an important step, Alfredo Fidel Nieves Portuondo said it will give an impetus to providing a broad picture of Azerbaijan in the Spanish-speaking countries and expanding relations with the news agencies of these countries.

Chairman of the Board of AZERTAC Aslan Aslanov emphasized that spreading news in Spanish is one of the key priorities for the agency. Hailing the Cuban Prensa Latina news agency's initiative to sign a cooperation agreement with AZERTAC, Aslan Aslanov said: “Spreading our news in Spanish, which is the world's second most widely spoken language, is about disseminating Azerbaijani realities to a larger audience, and making the news about Cuba and other Spanish-speaking countries available to local readers. Signing cooperation document with Prensa Latina news agency can open up good opportunities for implementation of joint projects, exchange of information and experience between the two agencies.”

Noting the importance of AZERTAC as a Spanish news source in Azerbaijan, Ambassador Portuondo expressed his readiness to support the signing of the agreement with Prensa Latina news agency. "Partnership between our agencies can provide a good ground for dissemination of information about our two countries," the ambassador stated.

The Cuban ambassador was informed about AZERTAC's presidency of the News Agencies World Congress and the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA). He was also told that AZERTAC has bureaus in 21 foreign countries and maintains relations with a number of Spanish news agencies within bilateral and international organizations.
