AZERTAC’s “If I were a tourist” feature heads to its next destination: Lake Khanbulan in Lankaran.
Nestled in the southeastern part of Lankaran, Lake Khanbulan is surrounded by lush foothill forests. Though artificially created, the lake - distinguished by its exotic landscape - has over time evolved into a natural-looking environment that seems to have existed for millennia. The reservoir, with a capacity of 52 million cubic meters, reaches a maximum depth of 75 meters.
The lake lies within the boundaries of Hirkan National Park, renowned for its unique ecosystem and rich biodiversity, protected by the state. The park is home to numerous endemic plant species found only in Azerbaijan, including iconic trees such as the Hirkan oak, ironwood, and Lankaran acacia. It also serves as a favored habitat for various migratory and native bird species.
There are intriguing stories about the origin of the lake's name. According to one legend, “Khanbulan” derives from the area once being a hunting ground for the khans of Lankaran. It is said that the khan would rest here, hunt in the forests, and drink from the springs - thus inspiring the name “Khanbulan,” meaning “Khan’s spring.”
The climate in the area is subtropical, and the coolness provided by the dense surrounding forests creates a refreshing and tranquil atmosphere.
