Burning Symbol of the Land of Fire – Yanardagh VIDEO
Baku, July 31, AZERTAC
The next feature in AZERTAC’s “If I Were a Tourist” column highlights the Yanardagh State Historical-Cultural and Natural Reserve.
Located in the village of Mammadli in the Absheron district, Yanardagh’s most valuable treasure is its continuously blazing flames. These eternal fires were ignited by natural gas leaking from cracks in solid rocks, caused by tectonic processes deep underground in a layer approximately 14 meters long. While similar natural gas fires exist in several places worldwide, most are found right here in Azerbaijan.
Beyond the natural eternal flame, the reserve also preserves other material, cultural heritage, and natural monuments. It is no coincidence that Yanardagh and other sites across Absheron have been revered as sacred by fire worshipers and Zoroastrians since ancient times. The area surrounding Yanardagh has been densely inhabited since the late Paleolithic period, as evidenced by the tambourine stone and other ancient archaeological finds in the vicinity.
