Shusha, January 22, AZERTAC
The next feature in AZERTAC’s “If I Were a Tourist” column turns the spotlight on the Shusha branch of the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum.
The artworks displayed at the Shusha branch of the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum offer visitors an opportunity to sense the spirit of the ancient land of Garabagh, the lifestyle and household traditions of the people who lived here for centuries, including artisans, as well as their aesthetic taste and artistic worldview, helping to recreate the historical atmosphere of the region.
The building housing the Shusha branch of the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum was constructed in the second half of the 19th century and is located in the Yukhari Quarter of the city. As the building became unusable during the occupation, restoration works were launched following the liberation of Shusha.
Today, alongside the exhibits that were once evacuated—mainly dating back to the 18th–20th centuries—the museum also showcases valuable carpets added to the branch’s collection in recent years. The exhibits include pile and pile-free carpets, carpet products, archaeological materials, national embroidery and costume sets, as well as examples of jewelry and artistic metalwork.
A touchscreen has been installed in the exhibition hall to enable visitors to obtain comprehensive information about the displays. It provides detailed insights into Garabagh’s tangible and intangible heritage, particularly the city of Shusha, its noble families, Garabagh carpets preserved in foreign collections, as well as the activities of the Shusha branch during the 1992–2022 period.
Visitors to the Shusha branch of the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum familiarize themselves with the rich cultural heritage of Garabagh, leaving with deep and lasting impressions.
