Baku hosts conference on congenital heart defects
Baku, February 16 (AZERTAC). A scientific-practical conference on the theme “Modern Approach to Congenital Heart Defects” has today been held at the Republican Diagnostics Center in Baku. Organized by the Azerbaijani Heart and Health Association, the conference was attended by local and foreign surgeons who mainly discussed diagnostic, new treatment methods and promotion of education and intellectual interaction among the cardiology fellows, as well as scientific cooperation of Azerbaijani health institutions with the leading world clinics.
According to Dr. Rashad Mahmudov, head of section at the Hospital, Chairman of Azerbaijan Cardiovascular Surgeons Association, funded by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation 15 children with congenital heart defects were operated by Azerbaijani surgeons under the guidance of the foreign specialists as part of the training courses being conducted at the Central Oil Workers Hospital in Baku from February 11.
Dr. Mahmudov said Dr. Alessandro Giamberti, pediatric cardiac surgeon from Italian San Donato Center and director of the German Pediatric Cardiology Clinic, Professor Dr. Jochen Weil were invited to Baku as part of the project.
He noted that the courses to run till February 18 would give an opportunity for young doctors to learn experience of European specialists and improve their skills.
Speaking about Azerbaijani doctors` achievements in cardiology, Dr. Mahmudov stressed that more than 500 cardiac surgeries had been performed in regions in 5 yearsç adding 20% of the operated persons were had congenital heart defects.
Mahmudov said even persons with 6-7 heart defects were successfully operated in Azerbaijan.
The speakers pointed out to the fact that the first cardiac surgery of a patient suffering from congenital heart defects was performed for the first time in Azerbaijan at the Topchubashov Scientific Surgery Center.
