Egypt votes in parliamentary elections

The first round of the parliamentary elections kicked off today in Egypt. Polling stations opened at 9am and will close at 9pm, with more than 27 million people across 14 of Egypt`s 27 provinces eligible to vote on Sunday and Monday in the first phase.

The second round of elections will be held in 13 provinces on November 22-23.

Voters are choosing 596 MPs for the lower house, the House of Representatives.

Security has been tightened across the country with at least 185,000 troops supporting police.
