La Liga strugglers Granada appoint Aitor Karanka as head coach
Baku, April 19, AZERTAC
La Liga strugglers Granada on Monday named Aitor Karanka as head coach, replacing Ruben Torrecilla, according to Xinhua.
Torrecilla only replaced Robert Moreno five games ago, of which the club has won one, drawn one and lost three. The last of those was a 4-1 defeat at home to Levante, which leaves Granada with just 29 points and in clear danger of relegation.
The former Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid player has coached Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough in England, but has never been a head coach in his homeland despite a spell as assistant to Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.
Local media report that his deal is for the last six matches of the season, but that he will remain at Granada if he is able to save them from relegation.
The 48-year-old will take his first training session on Tuesday before sitting in the dugout for the first time on their difficult visit to Atletico Madrid.
