PIETRO ERCOLE AGO CONFIDENT OF HEYDAR ALIYEV’S VICTORY
Chief of CE Ministers Committee’s AGO Monitoring Group, permanent representative of Italy to the Council of Europe (CE) Pietro Ercole AGO now staying in Azerbaijan for an official visit has reaffirmed his earlier statement that ‘there is no doubt that Heydar Aliyev would win the presidential election’, during his meeting with opposition leaders in the Milli Majlis. He said that no matter who will win - more important to conduct fair election. The meeting also focused on the issue of so-called political prisoners. It was noted that it is inadmissible that some COE reporters describe notorious malefactors, who were involved in terrorist acts, and high treasons, as political prisoners, had used this for putting pressure upon Azerbaijan. They complained that the reporters stay indifferent to plight of over one million refugees and IDPs, and Armenian aggression as a whole. Ambassador Pietro Ercole AGO stated that the list submitted by some NGOs, in fact, contains the names of the notorious criminals. He also said the Council of Europe cannot interfere in the settlement of Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Garabakh conflict, because the issue is the prerogative of OSCE. At the same time, the COE, according to him, stands for peaceful resolution of the conflict in the framework of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.
