STIVE PIFER: ‘GUUAM POSES NO THREAT FOR RUSSIA AND OTHER NEIGBORURS’
Responding the question on his proposals on the 3-4 July Yalta Summit, the US Assistant Under-Secretary of State Stiven Pifer said the United States recognizes the GUUAM Organization as a structure ensuring security, bilateral economic links and increase welfare in the region. He also noted the positive changes in the US-GUUAM negotiations that prove the higher level of these relations. He stressed the two to-be-implemented joint projects that will be approved at the Yalta Summit. One of them is the trade and transport program that will provide cooperation between the customs and border services, while another will promote creation of GUUAM’s virtual law-enforcement center to regulate joint activities. As known, the United States allotted 1 million US dollars for technical assistance to the Organization. ‘US position is that GUUAM poses no threat either for Russia or for other neighbors in the region’, he added. ‘On the contrary, strengthening of security and economic development would be useful for Russia’s interests as well. But the United States still is an observer at the Yalta Summit’, Mr. Stiven Pifer emphasized.
