Spanish chef received 48 years in prison for poisoning 19 of his co-workers by adding a drug to their meals

A former chef from the Spanish city of Gijon was sentenced to 48 years in prison after he was found guilty of trying to poison his colleagues, the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia reported.

Between 2005 and 2012, the man added a drug given for the treatment of alcohol dependence to his co-workers' food. When drinking alcohol with the medicine, one experiences a number of side effects, including headache, nausea, shortness of breath, sweating, chest pain, weakness and heart palpitations.

By making his colleagues sick, the cook wanted to get rid of them. Other employees were dismissed for poor performance or quit their jobs because they were unable to work. A total of 19 people were affected by the misdeeds of the malevolent chef.

The man used to buy drugs in one of the city's pharmacies.

In addition to 48 years in prison, the 57-year old man was ordered to pay €43,580 ($48,890) in compensation to the victims.
