The next feature in AZERTAC’s “If I Were a Tourist” column focuses on the Asgaran Fortress.
The Karabakh region is rich in historical, cultural, and architectural monuments. The Asgaran Fortress, built in the 18th century by order of Karabakh khan Panah Ali Khan, is one of the finest examples of Azerbaijani architecture.
The fortress is located 24 km from Shusha and 5 km from Khojaly, along both the right and left banks of the Gargar River. Its construction was linked to the rise of the Karabakh Khanate. The fortress includes a right-bank fortification with double stone walls reinforced by towers, and a left-bank section with a quadrangular tower. All towers are connected by two-story corridors, and the walls are 2–3 meters thick.
The Asgaran Fortress stands as one of the most significant tourist sites in the Karabakh region.
