Azerbaijan and Brazil discuss deepening cooperation in preparation for COP30

On June 18, the COP29 Presidency of Azerbaijan met with Dan Ioschpe, High-Level Champion for COP30 to be held in Brazil, on the sidelines of the June Climate Meetings in Bonn.
During the meeting, the complex and multi-faceted nature of the COP process was underscored. The parties discussed the achievements of COP29 and preparations for COP30, emphasizing the importance of the “Baku to Belém Roadmap.”
Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President and Representative of the President of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues, noted that the COP29 Conference held in Baku at a high level marked a turning point in climate finance. He stressed that COP29 was recognized as an inclusive and result-oriented conference where major decisions were adopted. He added that the Baku Conference created a significant legacy and that the COP29 team stands ready to share its experience with the Brazilian side.
Mukhtar Babayev also shared recommendations and Azerbaijan’s experience on several key COP-related areas. He highlighted the importance of active NGO and private sector engagement, and emphasized the critical role of transparency and strong collaboration with the media. He noted that the COP29 team in Azerbaijan had established close ties with national media and promoted ongoing public dialogue throughout the process.
COP30 High-Level Champion Dan Ioschpe praised the outcomes of COP29, particularly the advances in climate finance and the key decisions taken in Baku. He emphasized the establishment of close cooperation with Azerbaijan’s COP29 team in the lead-up to COP30 and expressed gratitude for the active involvement of COP29 High-Level Champion Nigar Arpadarai.
Ioschpe highlighted the value of Azerbaijan’s extensive experience and continued support, stating that specific initiatives would be implemented within the framework of the “Baku to Belém Roadmap,” which serves as a vital guide for future action.
He particularly underlined the growing importance of the bioeconomy in preserving forests, promoting biodiversity, and improving socio-economic opportunities for local communities, noting its increasing role in global climate discussions.
In her remarks, COP29 High-Level Champion Nigar Arpadarai stressed the importance of expanding cooperation in areas such as Indigenous Peoples, forests, and biodiversity under the “Implementation Agenda for Decisions.” She emphasized the need to enhance engagement with local communities and the public and underscored the critical role of the private sector in addressing climate change.
Nigar Arpadarai also expressed appreciation to her counterpart, Dan Ioschpe, for his strong interest in and support for the “Climate-Resilient SMEs” campaign launched during COP29.
