Azerbaijan highlights successful outcomes of WUF13 in New York

On July 16, A delegation of Azerbaijan, led by Anar Guliyev, Chairman of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture, attended the High-Level Meeting on the Midterm Review of the implementation of the New Urban Agenda of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, the United States.
In his remarks, Anar Guliyev briefed the participants on the successful outcomes delivered by the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku this year, while also introducing Azerbaijan’s approaches to sustainable and inclusive urban planning.
According to him, WUF13 was not only the largest session held to date, bringing together over 58,000 participants from 176 countries, but also a significant milestone on the road to the current High-Level Meeting.
Anar Guliyev emphasized that the first-ever Leaders’ Summit, initiated by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, also took place during WUF13.
“Bringing together heads of state and government, as well as international organizations, this platform has once again elevated urban development to the highest political level, demonstrating its role in ensuring sustainable development, climate resilience, and human welfare. As a continuation of this political impulse, a Ministerial Meeting focusing on the New Urban Agenda convened on the margins of the forum, gathering representatives from 111 countries, including 80 ministers and deputy ministers. The discussions demonstrated a shared determination to move from commitments to practical implementation through integrated planning, adequate and accessible housing policies, multi-level governance, and stronger partnerships. These priorities are reflected in the Chair’s Summary of the Ministerial Meeting and further strengthened by the Baku Call to Action. These documents create a common framework for translating our shared commitments into concrete results in the second phase of the implementation of the New Urban Agenda,” the Committee Chairman said.
He reaffirmed that Azerbaijan fully supports this approach and that the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture, the government body responsible for shaping and implementing urban planning policy, is committed to translating the principles of the New Urban Agenda into practical action at the national level.
Anar Guliyev also expressed Azerbaijan’s willingness to continue collaborating with the UN, UN-Habitat, UN Member States, and all stakeholders to advance sustainable urban development.
