Azeri delegation attending Animals Committee`s meeting in Geneva
Baku, July 21 (AZERTAC). An Azerbaijani delegation is taking part in a meeting of the Animals Committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Azeri delegation includes deputy minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Rauf Hajiyev and chairman of the Azerbaijan Fisheries Research Institute (AzerFRI) Mehman Akhundov.
The meeting brings together about 200 delegations, as well as experts of the convention countries, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations.
The meeting will discuss topics such as fish and reptile leathers, which are often used in luxury goods, the trade in sharks and the implementation of shark protection programmes, the efforts to control sturgeon stocks in Caspian range States and the use of reptile skins for fine leather products and result of the seminar on snakes held in China.
CITES is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. It is administered by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in Geneva.
