Gadabay, February 27, AZERTAC
The next feature in AZERTAC’s “If I Were a Tourist” column highlights Javanshir Fortress, also known as Koroghlu Fortress.
Situated 15 km from the center of the Gadabay district, the fortress is nestled among high mountains distinguished by picturesque landscapes and rich historical heritage.

Located on a steep cliff between the villages of Galakand and Miskinli, the fortress was built in a strategically advantageous and naturally inaccessible position.
The monument stands at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level and can be reached only on foot. The hiking route from the base of the mountain to the top of the fortress stretches about 740 meters. From the site, visitors can also admire the famous “Siemens” Bridge, one of the symbols of Gadabay.

The fortress walls are approximately one meter thick. A secret underground passage and a concealed water pipeline were also discovered within the structure, which was constructed for defensive purposes. According to some sources, this ancient monument is included in the list of Caucasian Albanian architectural landmarks and was built in the 7th century by Javanshir, the ruler of Caucasian Albania.
It is also believed that Koroghlu once lived in the fortress and that it served as one of his main shelters. During the Siemens period, the site was referred to in the German press as the “Paradise Fortress” due to its scenic beauty.
Today, this historic fortress — considered one of the visiting cards of Gadabay — remains a must-see destination for both local and foreign tourists exploring the region.
