The next feature in AZERTAC’s “If I Were a Tourist” column highlights the Heydar Mosque.
The mosque was built in Baku under the directives of President Ilham Aliyev. Constructed on a total area of 12,000 square meters, its façade is clad in special stones in the Shirvan-Absheron architectural style. The rich ornamental design creates a unique architectural harmony. The mosque features four minarets, each rising to a height of 95 meters.
The interior, covering 4,200 square meters, is adorned with intricate decorative elements, and verses from the Quran are inscribed along the edges of the dome. The main dome stands 55 meters high, while the second dome reaches 35 meters. The diameter of the main dome measures 30 meters.
With a capacity to accommodate up to 7,000 worshippers, the mosque is recognized as the largest religious complex in the South Caucasus.
The complex is also regarded as a symbol of peace, mutual respect, and multiculturalism, as representatives of different Islamic denominations can worship here together.
The spacious prayer hall is embellished with Islamic geometric patterns, stone carvings, and Arabic calligraphy, forming a harmonious ensemble. The upper floors include separate prayer rooms for women, Quran study classes, and library sections.
