Shaki, May 22, AZERTAC
As part of its new column spotlighting fascinating yet little-known landmarks in Baku and its surroundings, AZERTAC takes readers on a journey to Shaki — a region renowned for its unique contribution to Azerbaijan’s tourism sector.
In recent years, rural tourism in Shaki, particularly in the village of Kish, has seen remarkable development. With the tourist season approaching, preparations are underway at the local recreation centers to welcome visitors.
Nestled in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus, Kish captivates visitors with its mysterious natural beauty and well-developed tourism infrastructure. The village’s architecture is as charming as its landscape — featuring shingle-roofed houses, narrow streets, lush greenery, and fresh, oxygen-rich mountain air that breathes life into this ancient settlement.
Tourists visiting Kish often delight in homemade local dishes and show great interest in the village’s traditional jams and pickles.
Ilhama Huseynova, a long-time resident and tourism manager in Kish, has been welcoming guests from around the world for many years. Alongside her team, she proudly showcases Azerbaijan’s national cuisine in its most authentic form. Ilhama noted that six tourist groups from Europe and Asia are scheduled to visit Kish in the coming months.
She emphasized that foreign tourists’ fascination with village life and the unique experience of traditional dishes cooked over an open fire has grown significantly in recent years.
