NATO PA TO STEP UP ITS EFFORTS TO SETTLE CONFLICTS IN SOUTH CAUCASUS
Chairman of the Milli Majlis met September 21 with the delegation of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Committee’s Civil Dimension Sub-Committee on Democratic Governance led by its chairman Tchetin Kazak.
MM speaker said integration into the Euroatlantic structures is one of the priorities of the Azerbaijan’s foreign policy. From this point of view, Azerbaijan places a great emphasis on cooperation with the NATO and its Parliamentary Assembly.
Speaker Asadov said he is hopeful that visit of the NATO PA’s delegation will contribute to establishment of peace and stability in the South Caucasus region. According to MM Speaker, NATO PA pays a special attention to this region, and prepared a number of reports on the situation here.
He pointed out that Azerbaijan attaches a huge importance to strengthening democratic governances and developing civil society. Legal, economic and political reforms are successfully going on in the country, he noted.
Azerbaijan is strengthening its positions in terms of energy security in Europe. The country is actively involved in the global projects that can change the economic situation in the region.
According to Mr. Asadov, the Nagorno-Karabakh problem impedes Azerbaijan’s European integration. Armenia continues its aggressive policy, disregarding four UN resolutions on Nagorno-Karabakh and documents adopted by the PACE and NATO PA at the Riga summit.
O. Asadov said Azerbaijan believes that NATO will contribute to peace in the South Caucasus.
Tchetin Kazak touched on the meetings he had here in Azerbaijan. According to him, NATO Parliamentary Assembly Committee’s Civil Dimension Sub-Committee on Democratic Governance supports ongoing reforms in Azerbaijan. The organization keeps the developments in the region is focus of its attention. T. Kazak said the sub-committee will step up its efforts to solve the conflicts in the South Caucasus.
The meeting attended by first MM vice-speaker Ziyafet Asgarov and other officials also focused on the ways of resolving regional conflicts, role of parliament in developing the democratic governance and other issues.
